Today we did a little shopping and picked up some more school uniforms. A lot were donated, but we needed some more girls skirts. Then we headed out to the community center to put them all together with a back pack and we went out to deliver them. There is a young woman in Utah who started to make bracelets, called Glory Belle, and $2.00 from each bracelet goes towards school uniforms. Glory is now 16 and it was with the money she has raised that uniforms we donated and the rest of the skirts were purchased. Its amazing what we can do when we see a need that can be filled. What a great thing for her to come up with and keep it going to help these kids that would otherwise not be able to attend school just because they don't have a uniform. So some of the girls we were able to give them a bracelet along with their school clothes and back pack.
We also were able to go make some clay pots at one of the families homes. These are hand made pots from the volcanic soil. They are thrown on a wheel. They mix the soil or clay with water and then form it over a mold they have previously made depending on the size of pot they want to make. They pat it down and add water as they continue to pat and stretch they clay further down the molds to they size they want. They let them sit and dry a bit and then they can take them off and add embellishments, finish off the tops of the pots and add color. They will then let them dry completely and those with a homemade kiln will fire them to harden them. We were then told that people from the city will come and buy them and take them and sell them in the city. If they had the means to get them into the city themselves they would make a lot more money. They sell their pots for next to nothing.
